SUMMARY:For the Birds: Music of Olivier Messiaen (Mar 29)
DESCRIPTION:The French composer-organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was fascinated by birdsong. His field collection of the songs of hundreds of bird species\, meticulously transcribed into musical notation\, would become a vital musical source for Messiaen.  \n\n\n\nFor the Birds explores two of Messiaen’s works most deeply influenced by birdsong: Quartet for the End of Time\, where birds symbolize nature free and unfettered\, and selections from the Catalogue d’oiseaux\, where they evoke rich non-human ecologies within their natural habitats. \n\n\n\nJohn Bates\, Curator of Birds and Section Head of Life Sciences at the Field Museum\, will introduce the program. \n\n\n\nArtists: Daniel Pesca\, piano; Maria Ioudenitch\, violin; Graham Steele Johnson\, clarinet; Alexander Hersh\, cello; John Bates\, guest speaker \n\n\n\nThe program repeats on March 30 at Guarneri Hall.
