SUMMARY:Beyond the Art of Measures
DESCRIPTION:Nova Linea Musica’s Artist-in-Residence series continues with Beyond the Art of Measures\, an evening that celebrates the artistic journey from idea to realization. \n\n\n\nViolinist Rabia Brooke and pianist Nathanael Canfield give the world premiere of Art Measures for Violin and Piano\, a Nova Linea Musica commission by acclaimed composer Jennifer Higdon\, winner of three Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Her work traces the evolution of a creative idea from its first spark of inspiration through its shaping and refinement of form\, capturing both the mystery and physicality of the artistic process. Measure by measure\, Higdon honors the vital role performers play in bringing new music to life. The program also includes the virtuosic Anthèmes 1 by Pierre Boulez. \n\n\n\nBeyond the Art of Measures also includes four works for viola and piano\, performed by Sam Rosenthal: Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel\, Keoni Bolding’s Paraphrase Act II\, and two pieces by Grammy winner Michelle Barzel Ross\, Where Things Weigh Nothing at All and a commission by Nova Linea Musica. Collaborative pianist Tamila Salimdjanova joins both these artists in this compelling celebration of sound and creation. \n\n\n\nNova Linea Musica serves as a catalyst for the creation and promotion of new music through commissions\, live performances\, and the creation of exceptional audio and video recordings featuring dynamic emerging and established performers. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nJennifer Higdon: Art Measures (NLM Commission and World Premiere for violin and piano)Pierre Boulez: Anthèmes 1 for solo violinArvo Pärt: Spiegel im Spiegel for viola and pianoMichelle Barzel Ross: Where Things Weigh Nothing for viola and pianoMichelle Barzel Ross: NLM Commission for viola and piano \n\n\n\nArtists: Rabia Brooke\, violin; Sam Rosenthal\, viola; Nathanael Canfield\, piano; and Tamila Salimdjanova\, piano \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. Also on the program are Color Through Piano Trio by Grammy Award-winning composer Jennifer Higdon\, and Piano Trio No. 1\, Op. 28 by Lera Auerbach—a work of vivid emotional contrasts that evokes the spirit of both Bach and Shostakovich. \n\n\n\nAdding a personal dimension to the evening\, cellist Alexander Hersh performs a set of solo works\, including Daniel Pesca’s quietly searching In Solitude\, Marc Neikrug’s dramatic Petrus for cello and piano\, and the world premiere of a newly composed piece based on the imaginative premise of music for another planet. \n\n\n\nNova Linea Musica serves as a catalyst for the creation and promotion of new music through commissions\, live performances\, and the creation of exceptional audio and video recordings featuring dynamic emerging and established performers. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nStacy Garrop: NLM Commission and World Premiere for piano trioJennifer Higdon: Color Through for piano trioLera Auerbach: Piano Trio No. 1\, Op. 28Daniel Pesca: In Solitude for solo celloMarc Neikrug: Petrus for cello and pianoAlexander Hersh: New work for solo cello \n\n\n\nArtists: NLM Piano Trio (Rabia Brooke\, violin; Haddon Kay\, cello; Tamia Salimdjanova\, piano) and Alex Hersh\, cello \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:On September 2\, 1945\, Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri brought an official end to World War II. Eighty years later\, Guarneri Hall commemorates this historic moment with 1945: At War’s End\, a two-day festival that invites us to reflect on the lives of composers and musicians affected by the deadliest armed conflict in human history. \n\n\n\nThe programs feature musical works composed between 1944 and 1946 along with one contemporary work. In the course of two concerts\, we’ll explore their embedded themes of resilience\, identity\, despair\, and hope. \n\n\n\n\nRemembrance concludes our series with a pair of deeply reflective works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten\, both of whom were profoundly impacted by the war’s devastation and the liberation of the death camps in 1945. In different ways\, they explore themes of death\, grief\, and despair that were fresh in the minds and hearts of these composers\, although both would later compose works explicitly addressing the war. A contemporary work by Nagasaki native Michiru Ōshima begins the musical portion of the evening. \n\n\n\nThe program opens with remarks from Rocky Kolb\, the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nMichiru Ōshima (b. 1961): MemoriesDmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975): Piano Trio No. 2\, Op. 67Benjamin Britten (1913-1976): String Quartet No. 2\, Op. 36 \n\n\n\nArtists: Terra String Quartet (Harriet Langley\, violin; Amelia Dietrich\, violin; Chih-Ta Chen\, viola; Audrey Chen\, cello); Brian Hong\, violin; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Daniel Pesca\, piano \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Rocky Kolb \n\n\n\nRead articles on our website related to the 1945: At War’s End series here and here. \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Resilience
\n\n\n\n\nOur first program\, Resilience\, showcases music by three Central European composers\, each with their own unique story of displacement by the war. Two were Poles of Jewish descent: Mieczysław Weinberg\, who fled Poland for the Soviet Union on foot in 1939 and later became a protégé of Dmitri Shostakovich\, and Szymon Laks\, arrested in France in 1941 and eventually interned at Auschwitz and later Dachau until the camp was liberated. Also in 1941\, the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů fled Vichy France for the United States. Despite their harrowing experiences\, in their postwar music we find a wellspring of resilience in the face of devastation. \n\n\n\nThe program opens with remarks from Paul Poast\, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Committee on International Relations at the University of Chicago. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nBohuslav Martinů (1890-1955): Czech Rhapsody\, H 307Szymon Laks (1901-1983): String Quartet No. 3\, “On Polish Folk Themes”Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996): Piano Trio\, Op. 24 \n\n\n\nArtists: Terra String Quartet (Harriet Langley\, violin; Amelia Dietrich\, violin; Chih-Ta Chen\, viola; Audrey Chen\, cello); Brian Hong\, violin; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Daniel Pesca\, piano \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Paul Poast \n\n\n\nRead articles on our website related to the 1945: At War’s End series here and here. \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members.
