He has also won first prizes in other competitions\, including the Chicago International Violin Competition\, the Camerata Artists International Competition\, and the Chappaqua Orchestra Concerto Competition. \n\n\n\nKento has performed at major venues\, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center\, sharing the stage with renowned artists like Maxim Vengerov and Jaime Laredo. Kento was selected as an active finalist participant in the Kronberg Academy Masterclass 2023 and has been a guest artist on NPR’s From The Top. In the Fall of 2024\, he received the $50\,000 Gurrena Fellowship career grant from the Meadowmount School of Music. \n\n\n\nKento has been a student at Juilliard’s pre-college division since age 10\, studying with Dr. Ann Setzer. Kento is also a 2024 National YoungArts Finalist and a frequent concertmaster of Juilliard’s leading Pre-college ensembles. Beyond music\, Kento is passionate about arthritis research\, having won 2nd prize at the Regeneron ISEF in Biomedical Engineering and several other science awards. He often explores the connection between science and art in his public communications. Kento Hong was born in New York in 2006 and began violin studies at age 6 under Aimee Kreston. \n\n\n\n\nNelson Padgett Bio\nNelson Padgett enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist and collaborator. He has appeared with the Houston\, National\, and North Carolina Symphonies\, and his many awards include a Silver Medal at the William Kapell International Competition and a Beethoven Fellowship from the American Pianists Association. A former student of Leon Fleisher\, he has performed with the Philip Glass Ensemble since 1988. Specializing in collaboration with string players\, he has given recitals with renowned violinists such as Pamela Frank and Elmar Oliveira\, and has been an official pianist at the Meadowmount School of Music\, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis\, and the Cooper International Violin Competition. Since 2011 he has been a pianist at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. A native of North Carolina\, Nelson has lived in New York City since 1987. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Meadowmount and the Gurrena Fellowship\nFounded in 1944 by legendary violin teacher Ivan Galamian\, the Meadowmount School of Music is a seven-week summer program for violinists\, violists\, and cellists. Musicians ages 10 to 30 from around the world gather at the school’s campus in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York to immerse themselves in an environment where they can focus on personal and artistic development through intensive training with leading faculty\, individual practice\, chamber music\, and performance opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe Gurrena Fellowship was created in 2022 in memory of David A. Barnebl\, an educated\, passionate music lover\, by his wife\, Linda Gurrena Barnebl\, of Panton\, VT. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support and encourage exceptionally talented students to become abundantly successful in their professional journey.  \n\n\n\nThis generous fellowship enables its recipients to continue to pursue their careers with vigor and passion without the burden of financial constraint. During the Fellowship year\, the recipient receives financial support and mentorship\, featured concert engagements supported by Meadowmount School of Music\, and continued collaborations and training with the Meadowmount faculty for the upcoming year and 2025 summer session. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. DESCRIPTION:Building on last year’s exuberant screening of Sherlock Jr accompanied by original live music\, the brilliant pianist and composer of silent film scores Stephen Prutsman will return to Guarneri Hall to present another hilarious Buster Keaton evening. \n\n\n\nOn this season’s marquee is a screening of Keaton’s classic silent film The General with Prutsman’s original score\, played live by Prutsman himself and members of NEXUS Chamber Music. SUMMARY:Proust's Salon: Tracing the Spiral of Time
DESCRIPTION:I not only love\, not only admire\, not only adore your music\, I have been and am still falling in love with it. I could write a book more than 300 pages long about it.Marcel Proust\n\n\n\nMarcel Proust wrote volumes on the fluid quality of time as it exists in memory. Proust’s friend\, composer Gabriel Fauré\, advocated for the intimacy of chamber music as a way to nurture and express “inner life.”  Fauré’s student\, Charles Koechlin\, proposed a “tower” from which the artist could objectively observe and process the world. All regarded the salon as an intimate means to transport composers and listeners to a timeless place of reflection and detachment\, where past and present intermingle. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nProust’s Salon: Tracing the Spiral of Time revives this deeply personal notion of time with music of Fauré\, Schmitt\, and Koechlin that might easily have been heard at one of the salon events that Proust and his circle of artists favored. DESCRIPTION:Pierrot\, Avatar of the Modern Artist\n\n\n\nThe stock character Pierrot originated in the Commedia dell’Arte of 17th century Italy. This sad clown has been a source of artistic inspiration ever since\, reflected in the work of French painters and Symbolist poets such as Jaques Prévert\, Jules Laforgue\, and Paul Verlaine. Poet Albert Giraud’s 50-poem set entitled Pierrot lunaire: rondels bergamasques\, formed the basis of the commission that resulted in Arnold Schoenberg’s melodrama\, Pierrot lunaire. \n\n\n\nThis unique pair of evenings will provide fascinating context for Pierrot lunaire with in-depth perspectives on the literary and theatrical histories of the Pierrot character. DESCRIPTION:Thirty-five years after its dismantling\, the Berlin Wall continues to hold a place in memory as a symbol of the Cold War. The collective output of a generation of writers\, artists\, and musicians on both sides of the Iron Curtain reveals a complex and often unexpected mix of conflicted nationalist loyalties\, ideological optimism\, and artistic triumph in the face of profound challenge. Guarneri Hall’s three-day festival commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 will explore the music of the Cold War and its context through the socio-political lenses of both the west and the east. With the help of leading topical experts\, each event will illuminate less conventionally understood aspects of the era’s music and provide a balanced view of the forces that influenced its composers. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nHungarian composers György Ligeti (1923-2006) and György Kurtág (b. 1926) met as prospective students of Béla Bartók at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest in 1946. They became lifelong friends but each went on to forge very different artistic lives. In the wake of the Hungarian uprising of 1956\, Ligeti fled Hungary and resettled in Vienna. He eventually took Austrian citizenship and would spend the rest of his life living and working in the West. Kurtág\, meanwhile\, chose to return to Budapest following his studies in Paris in 1957-58. With the help of leading topical experts\, each event will illuminate less conventionally understood aspects of the era’s music and provide a balanced view of the forces that influenced its composers. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nNo composer is more often associated with Russian political repression than Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). In 1960\, with Cold War tensions approaching their high point\, Shostakovich composed two profoundly contrasting works that together demonstrate an incredible range of expression. In Satires\, Pictures of the Past\, Op. 109\, Shostakovich tested the limits of artistic freedom with parodies of old Russian tales and a sardonic polka to mock the absurdities of the Soviet bureaucracy. His next work\, the String Quartet #8\, is dedicated to the victims of fascism and war\, but further expresses the trauma Shostakovich felt after joining the Communist party. \n\n\n\nDance on a Tightrope\, written in 1993 by Sofia Gubaidulina (b. 1933)\, demonstrates the flourishing of music in the immediate post-Soviet era. It’s been described as “a metaphor for life as risk\, and art as flight into another existence…”  \n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago Graham School instructor Jennifer A. Lind will discuss the events leading up to the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961\, with emphasis on how everyday Germans and creative artists persevered throughout decades of authoritarian government. With the help of leading topical experts\, each event will illuminate less conventionally understood aspects of the era’s music and provide a balanced view of the forces that influenced its composers. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nHanns Eisler (1989-1962) was an important German composer whose work is seldom heard in the US. His story reflects the multiple and sometimes competing perspectives of 20th century history and politics. A German pre-war Communist who frequently collaborated with Berthold Brecht\, Eisler emigrated to the US after his work was banned by the Nazi Party in 1933. In 1948 Eisler was blacklisted and deported from the US. He eventually settled in East Germany and would go on to write its national anthem\, but would often find himself persona non grata again\, writing music that was too experimental\, too difficult\, and too political for the Communist regime. A reception will follow the performance. \n\n\n\nTickets are available below\, on this page. \n\n\n\nThe programmatic theme for the upcoming Lakeshore Rush season is “One Small World\,” which is both a nod to the Disneyland attraction and a unifying message of peace. This 10th Anniversary season will feature seven concerts highlighting composers from each of the seven continents. Concerts will take place in neighborhoods throughout Chicago beginning in September and continuing through June 2025. SUMMARY:A Taste of At The World's Edge
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Benjamin Baker has recorded works for his New Zealand-based At The World’s Edge Festival (AWE) at Guarneri Hall for the last couple of seasons. Now\, Ben is offering Chicago a special treat with a live evening from the At the World’s Edge Festival in Guarneri Hall.  The program will include works by Bedřich Smetana\, the father of Czech composers\, and later Czech torch-bearers Joseph Suk and Bohuslav Martinů. Among these masterpieces are gems by New Zealand composers Salina Fisher and Victoria Kelly. Fisher’s Yabo playfully explores her Japanese heritage and the shō\, an ancient bamboo mouth organ used in the Japanese Court. Kelly’s Waraki\, written for AWE Directors Benjamin Baker and Justine Cormack\, depicts the coming together of two visions and spirits\, perhaps as free as birds. Guarneri Hall apologizes for any inconvenience to our patrons. \n\n\n\nJoin us on May 14 for the Guarneri Hall debut of mezzo-soprano and pianist Anastasia Antropova with pianist Boris Krivoshein. An Evening at the Salon will feature works for voice and solo piano by Mendelssohn\, Schubert\, Faure\, and other composers of the romantic époque\, with a special piano duo to end the night. Meet and mingle with the artists and other audience members at a reception following the evening’s performance. \n\n\n\nAnastasia Antropova is a classical singer\, also trained as a pianist and vocal coach. She performed her first opera role in the USA in the production of Bertha by Ned Rorem in 2021 (Chicago\, Roosevelt University). She sang the role of a New York City Care Worker in Shendon’s On Call: Covid-19 and RN in Bluebeard’s Waiting Room by Granger. In 2023 she performed in Suor Angelica by Puccini\, and sang the role of Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen during Chicago Summer Opera in 2023. \n\n\n\nChicago-based pianist Boris Krivoshein is a versatile collaborative pianist who is fluent in a wide range of musical styles. DESCRIPTION:Cellist Luiz Fernando Venturelli\, winner of the 2023 Meadowmount School of Music Gurrena Fellowship\, will perform works by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson\, Ludwig van Beethoven\, Dimitri Cervo\, George Gershwin\, Leoš Janáček\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\, and Valdir Azevedo/ Zequinha de Abreu. SUMMARY:George Crumb: Ancient Mysteries and the Universe of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:American composer George Crumb (1929-2022) will be the focus of an evening dedicated to his work. Scott Yoo\, conductor\, violinist\, and star of PBS’ popular series Now Hear This\, will host the program with performances by pianist Adam Neiman\, flutist Alice Dade\, members of NEXUS Chamber Music\, and members of the Grossman Ensemble. Get tickets now. \n\n\n\nGeorge Crumb expressed his ideas through extended instrumental techniques\, vivid musical dialogues\, and evocative symbolism embedded in theatrical contexts. In the process\, he forged a new means of musical messaging that would have a lasting effect on avant-garde music.
