SUMMARY:Guarneri Hall Benefit 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening of music and merriment at Guarneri Hall’s Annual Benefit Concert—a sparkling\, light-hearted celebration of the season featuring world-class performers and festive surprises. Our hosts for the evening are celebrated composer Augusta Read Thomas and our beloved Artistic Director Stefan Hersh. (Jump to tickets) \n\n\n\nAcclaimed pianist Evren Ozel\, fresh off his Bronze Medal win at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, will be joined by violinist Stephanie Zyzak and NEXUS Chamber Music Co-Artistic Director cellist Alexander Hersh. This powerhouse trio brings a joyful spirit to a program of works as vibrant and expressive as the performers themselves. \n\n\n\nFrom Schubert’s luminous “Notturno” and Debussy’s shimmering piano preludes to the fiery energy of Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2\, the evening promises wit\, warmth\, and musical brilliance. \n\n\n\nExpect more than just great music—some short film reels\, playful banter\, audience interaction\, and good-natured fun will keep the evening upbeat and unexpected. After the concert\, all guests are invited to a festive holiday afterparty with the artists. SUMMARY:Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:On September 2\, 1945\, Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri brought an official end to World War II. Eighty years later\, Guarneri Hall commemorates this historic moment with 1945: At War’s End\, a two-day festival that invites us to reflect on the lives of composers and musicians affected by the deadliest armed conflict in human history. \n\n\n\nThe programs feature musical works composed between 1944 and 1946 along with one contemporary work. In the course of two concerts\, we’ll explore their embedded themes of resilience\, identity\, despair\, and hope. \n\n\n\n\nRemembrance concludes our series with a pair of deeply reflective works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten\, both of whom were profoundly impacted by the war’s devastation and the liberation of the death camps in 1945. In different ways\, they explore themes of death\, grief\, and despair that were fresh in the minds and hearts of these composers\, although both would later compose works explicitly addressing the war. A contemporary work by Nagasaki native Michiru Ōshima begins the musical portion of the evening. \n\n\n\nThe program opens with remarks from Rocky Kolb\, the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nMichiru Ōshima (b. 1961): MemoriesDmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975): Piano Trio No. 2\, Op. 67Benjamin Britten (1913-1976): String Quartet No. 2\, Op. 36 \n\n\n\nArtists: Terra String Quartet (Harriet Langley\, violin; Amelia Dietrich\, violin; Chih-Ta Chen\, viola; Audrey Chen\, cello); Brian Hong\, violin; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Daniel Pesca\, piano \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Rocky Kolb \n\n\n\nRead articles on our website related to the 1945: At War’s End series here and here. \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Resilience
\n\n\n\n\nOur first program\, Resilience\, showcases music by three Central European composers\, each with their own unique story of displacement by the war. Two were Poles of Jewish descent: Mieczysław Weinberg\, who fled Poland for the Soviet Union on foot in 1939 and later became a protégé of Dmitri Shostakovich\, and Szymon Laks\, arrested in France in 1941 and eventually interned at Auschwitz and later Dachau until the camp was liberated. Also in 1941\, the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů fled Vichy France for the United States. Despite their harrowing experiences\, in their postwar music we find a wellspring of resilience in the face of devastation. \n\n\n\nThe program opens with remarks from Paul Poast\, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Committee on International Relations at the University of Chicago. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nBohuslav Martinů (1890-1955): Czech Rhapsody\, H 307Szymon Laks (1901-1983): String Quartet No. 3\, “On Polish Folk Themes”Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996): Piano Trio\, Op. 24 \n\n\n\nArtists: Terra String Quartet (Harriet Langley\, violin; Amelia Dietrich\, violin; Chih-Ta Chen\, viola; Audrey Chen\, cello); Brian Hong\, violin; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Daniel Pesca\, piano \n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Paul Poast \n\n\n\nRead articles on our website related to the 1945: At War’s End series here and here. \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Proust's Salon: Tracing the Spiral of Time
DESCRIPTION:I not only love\, not only admire\, not only adore your music\, I have been and am still falling in love with it. I could write a book more than 300 pages long about it.Marcel Proust\n\n\n\nMarcel Proust wrote volumes on the fluid quality of time as it exists in memory. Proust’s friend\, composer Gabriel Fauré\, advocated for the intimacy of chamber music as a way to nurture and express “inner life.”  Fauré’s student\, Charles Koechlin\, proposed a “tower” from which the artist could objectively observe and process the world. All regarded the salon as an intimate means to transport composers and listeners to a timeless place of reflection and detachment\, where past and present intermingle. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nProust’s Salon: Tracing the Spiral of Time revives this deeply personal notion of time with music of Fauré\, Schmitt\, and Koechlin that might easily have been heard at one of the salon events that Proust and his circle of artists favored. Pianist Adam Neiman will provide commentary. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nCharles Koechlin (1867-1950): String Quartet No. 1\, Op. 51Florent Schmitt (1870-1958): Musiques Intimes\, Book 2\, Op. 29 for solo pianoGabriel Fauré (1845-1924): Piano Quartet No. 2\, Op. 45 \n\n\n\nArtists: Adam Neiman\, piano; Geneva Lewis and Stefan Hersh\, violins; Teng Li\, viola; Bion Tsang\, cello \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. DESCRIPTION:Pierrot\, Avatar of the Modern Artist\n\n\n\nThe stock character Pierrot originated in the Commedia dell’Arte of 17th century Italy. SUMMARY:Sounds of the Cold War: A Tale of Two Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Thirty-five years after its dismantling\, the Berlin Wall continues to hold a place in memory as a symbol of the Cold War. The collective output of a generation of writers\, artists\, and musicians on both sides of the Iron Curtain reveals a complex and often unexpected mix of conflicted nationalist loyalties\, ideological optimism\, and artistic triumph in the face of profound challenge. Guarneri Hall’s three-day festival commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 will explore the music of the Cold War and its context through the socio-political lenses of both the west and the east. With the help of leading topical experts\, each event will illuminate less conventionally understood aspects of the era’s music and provide a balanced view of the forces that influenced its composers. \n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nHungarian composers György Ligeti (1923-2006) and György Kurtág (b. 1926) met as prospective students of Béla Bartók at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest in 1946. They became lifelong friends but each went on to forge very different artistic lives. In the wake of the Hungarian uprising of 1956\, Ligeti fled Hungary and resettled in Vienna. He eventually took Austrian citizenship and would spend the rest of his life living and working in the West. Kurtág\, meanwhile\, chose to return to Budapest following his studies in Paris in 1957-58. Most of his creative output would come from behind the Iron Curtain. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago Associate Professor of Political Science Paul Poast will provide context for compositions from Ligeti and Kurtág with a discussion of the Cold War politics in Hungary to which they reacted so differently\, despite their deep friendship and shared values. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nGyörgy Ligeti: Homage a Hilding Rosenberg for Violin and CelloGyörgy Kurtág: Officium Breve opus 28 (1989) in memoriam Andreae SzervánszkyGyörgy Kurtág: Six Moments Musicaux for String QuartetGyörgy Ligeti: Horn Trio \n\n\n\nArtists: Steven Beck\, piano; Elizabeth Fayette\, Maria Ioudenitch\, and Adé Williams\, violins; Brian Hong\, viola; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Nicolee Kuester\, French horn \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Sounds of the Cold War: Between Laughter and Tears
\n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nNo composer is more often associated with Russian political repression than Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). In 1960\, with Cold War tensions approaching their high point\, Shostakovich composed two profoundly contrasting works that together demonstrate an incredible range of expression. In Satires\, Pictures of the Past\, Op. 109\, Shostakovich tested the limits of artistic freedom with parodies of old Russian tales and a sardonic polka to mock the absurdities of the Soviet bureaucracy. His next work\, the String Quartet #8\, is dedicated to the victims of fascism and war\, but further expresses the trauma Shostakovich felt after joining the Communist party. \n\n\n\nDance on a Tightrope\, written in 1993 by Sofia Gubaidulina (b. 1933)\, demonstrates the flourishing of music in the immediate post-Soviet era. It’s been described as “a metaphor for life as risk\, and art as flight into another existence…”  \n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago Graham School instructor Jennifer A. Lind will discuss the events leading up to the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961\, with emphasis on how everyday Germans and creative artists persevered throughout decades of authoritarian government. Special attention will be paid to how the fall of the Berlin Wall was received differently between East and West Germany\, Eastern and Western Europe\, and the United States. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nDmitri Shostakovich: Satires\, Pictures of the Past Op. 109Sofia Gubaidulina: Dancer on a TightropeDmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 8\, Op. 110 \n\n\n\nArtists: Laura Strickling\, soprano; Steven Beck\, piano; Elizabeth Fayette\, Maria Ioudenitch and Adé Williams\, violins; Brian Hong\, viola; Alex Hersh\, cello \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members. SUMMARY:Sounds of the Cold War: The Landscape of Exile
\n\n\n\nAbout This Event\n\n\n\nHanns Eisler (1989-1962) was an important German composer whose work is seldom heard in the US. His story reflects the multiple and sometimes competing perspectives of 20th century history and politics. A German pre-war Communist who frequently collaborated with Berthold Brecht\, Eisler emigrated to the US after his work was banned by the Nazi Party in 1933. In 1948 Eisler was blacklisted and deported from the US. He eventually settled in East Germany and would go on to write its national anthem\, but would often find himself persona non grata again\, writing music that was too experimental\, too difficult\, and too political for the Communist regime. Read more about Hanns Eisler. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago Sociology Professor Andreas Glaeser will frame this performance of Eisler’s works with a discussion of 20th-century history and the politics reflected in the music of Eisler’s era. \n\n\n\nProgram: The Music of Hanns Eisler\n\n\n\nSelections from “The Hollywood Songbook” (1942-43) for low voice and pianoFourteen Ways of Describing Rain\, Op. 70 for flute\, clarinet\, violin/viola\, cello and pianoSeptet No. 2 (“Circus”)  for flute/piccolo\, clarinet\, bassoon\, and string quartet“Serious Songs” for baritone and strings \n\n\n\nArtists: Tyler Duncan\, baritone; Erika Switzer\, piano; Elizabeth Fayette and Stefan Hersh\, violins; Brian Hong and Tanner Menees\, violas; Ari Evan and Alexander Hersh\, cellos; Constance Volk\, flute; Katherine Jimoh\, clarinet; Ben Roidl-Ward\, bassoon \n\n\n\n\n\nGuarneri Hall is committed to ensuring that all our programs and activities are accessible to all audience members.
