SUMMARY:Revolutions 1: 1796
DESCRIPTION:How does change really happen? What is revolutionary change? Are there relationships between political revolution\, social revolution and musical revolution?  \n\n\n\nRevolutions 1 explores these questions through the music and politics of 1796\, in the aftermath of the French Revolution. In fact\, post-revolutionary Paris was also home to a revolutionary time in the development of the bow. Violinist and violin expert Stefan Hersh will explain how changes in bow design led to changes in music that helped to usher in the heightened emotional range of the Romantic era that followed. \n\n\n\nA program of selected works by Mozart\, Haydn and Beethoven will bring these revolutionary changes to life. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): Sonata for Violin and Piano in E minor\, K. 304Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Piano Trio No. 35 in C major\, Hoboken XV:21Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Piano Trio Op.1\, No. 3 \n\n\n\nArtists: Chelsea Wang\, piano; Nathan Meltzer; Alexander Hersh\, cello

SUMMARY:Revolutions 2: 1918
DESCRIPTION:How does change really happen? What is revolutionary change? Are there relationships between political revolution\, social revolution and musical revolution?  \n\n\n\nRevolutions 2 explores these questions through the music and politics of 1918\, in the wake of World War I and the Russian Revolution. As monarchies dissolved and empires transformed\, boundaries that had previously constrained composers gave way and new compositional freedoms burst forth\, as evidenced in works by Ravel\, Stravinsky and Janáček. \n\n\n\nSocial scientist Andreas Glaser will add perspective to what promises to be a 3-way conversation between scholars\, musicians and the Guarneri Hall audience. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nMaurice Ravel (1875-1937): DuoIgor Stravinsky (1882-1971): L’Histoire du SoldatLeoš Janáček (1854-1928): Quartet No. 1\, “The Kreutzer Sonata” \n\n\n\nArtists: Chelsea Wang\, piano; Nathan Meltzer and Eric Gratz\, violin; TBD\, viola; Alexander Hersh\, cello; Katherine Jimoh\, clarinet

SUMMARY:Winterreise
DESCRIPTION:Soprano Chrystal E. Williams returns to Guarneri Hall for Winterreise\, a cycle of 24 songs composed by Schubert in 1827 and set to texts by Wilhelm Müller. \n\n\n\nIn failing health and nearing the end of his brief life\, Schubert was in a deeply melancholic frame of mind as he composed Winterreise. With an aching beauty and intensity that knows no parallel\, Winterreise depicts grief over lost love\, existential despair and resignation through scenes of winter.  \n\n\n\nZev Kane\, classical program director at WRTI Philadelphia\, joins us to bring the story of Schubert and Winterreise to life. \n\n\n\nArtists: Chrystal E. Williams\, soprano; Zev Kane\, host

SUMMARY:Syncopated America (Feb 9)
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated pianist John Novacek brings his deep inside knowledge of ragtime to Guarneri Hall for a solo performance that celebrates this uniquely American style. Syncopated America features wonderfully informed performances of classic rags by Scott Joplin\, Joseph Lamb\, James Scott and others alongside some of Mr. Novacek’s own compositions. Some are incredibly touching\, others raucous fun. It’s good old Americana delivered with all the panache\, style\, and good humor that one could wish for. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nThe program includes selections by: \n\n\n\n\nScott Joplin\n\n\n\nJames Scott\n\n\n\nJoseph Lamb\n\n\n\nArtie Matthews\n\n\n\nClaude Debussy\n\n\n\nGeorge Gershwin\n\n\n\nJames P Johnson\n\n\n\nWilliam Bolcom\n\n\n\nRobin Frost\n\n\n\n\nArtists: John Novacek\, pianist/host with special guest Alexander Hersh\, cello \n\n\n\nThe program repeats on February 10 at Guarneri Hall.

SUMMARY:For the Birds: Music of Olivier Messiaen (Mar 29)
DESCRIPTION:The French composer-organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was fascinated by birdsong. His field collection of the songs of hundreds of bird species\, meticulously transcribed into musical notation\, would become a vital musical source for Messiaen. \n\n\n\nFor the Birds explores two of Messiaen’s works most deeply influenced by birdsong: Quartet for the End of Time\, where birds symbolize nature free and unfettered\, and selections from the Catalogue d’oiseaux\, where they evoke rich non-human ecologies within their natural habitats. \n\n\n\nJohn Bates\, Curator of Birds and Section Head of Life Sciences at the Field Museum\, will introduce the program. \n\n\n\nArtists: Daniel Pesca\, piano; Maria Ioudenitch\, violin; Graham Steele Johnson\, clarinet; Alexander Hersh\, cello; John Bates\, guest speaker \n\n\n\nThe program repeats on March 30 at Guarneri Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Threshold Acoustics—the team of wizards behind the design of Guarneri Hall—have an almost uncanny understanding of how our ears process sound\, and how the shape\, materials\, and finish of every surface in a room can transform what we hear. In a well-designed acoustic space\, every aspect of room geometry\, materials and composition work together to optimize the sound of the room. \n\n\n\nFor Sound Lab\, Threshold Partner Carl Giegold and Senior Consultant Marcus Mayell will explain the principles of acoustic design that went into the making of Guarneri Hall.
