Renowned Cellist Lynn Harrell (1944-2020)

Dear Friends,

Guarneri Hall NFP is mourning the loss of the great cellist Lynn Harrell. Lynn was a towering presence among musicians of his time, and an artist and human being with a profoundly generous spirit.

Lynn was also a friend to us at Guarneri Hall, where he gave an insightful master class in 2019. His musical and pedagogical force can be seen on display in the archived live stream of that event and we encourage you to watch it here.

Lynn’s incredible command of the cello and his deep connection to the repertoire can be witnessed in his many recordings and performances on television. We have lost a great man, musician, and friend but he has left us so much and he will never be forgotten.

Stefan Hersh brings a unique confluence of skills to his role in launching the Guarneri Hall not-for-profit: As a violinist he has held key positions in major orchestras such as the Minnesota Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony. As a chamber musician he has performed nationally as a member of the Callisto Ensemble, the Chicago String Quartet and at numerous music festivals. As a pedagogue he has served as Associate Professor of violin at DePaul and Roosevelt Universities and has given master classes throughout the United States. He is a founding partner of Darnton & Hersh Fine Violins in Chicago.

Guarneri Hall is located in Chicago’s Loop, near Symphony Center and the Art Institute of Chicago. Convenient paid garage parking is available east of the building at 17 East Adams. We are close to numerous bus and train routes; CTA Red and Blue Lines stop nearby at Jackson while Purple, Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink Lines are steps away at Adams and Wabash.
