Soprano Chrystal E. Williams returns to Guarneri Hall for Winterreise, a cycle of 24 songs composed by Schubert in 1827 and set to texts by Wilhelm Müller.
In failing health and nearing the end of his brief life, Schubert was in a deeply melancholic frame of mind as he composed Winterreise. With an aching beauty and intensity that knows no parallel, Winterreise depicts grief over lost love, existential despair and resignation through scenes of winter.
Zev Kane, classical program director at WRTI Philadelphia, joins us to bring the story of Schubert and Winterreise to life.
