Conductor Terrance Gray

Remembering Terrance Gray

We are mourning the passing of conductor Terrance Malone Gray, age 59, who was a fixture in the lives of young musicians in Chicago for nearly 30 years. Terrance was the Associate Conductor of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and Music Director of the Rita Simo Youth Orchestra. His cheerful, nurturing musical guidance for Chicago area young people was a model for exemplary music education.

Terrance studied violin with Elizabeth Grabow Mueller and later with Marc Zinger and Victor Aitay at DePaul University. He was concertmaster of the DePaul University Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before becoming Music Director of the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra and the principal conductor of CYSO’s Concert Orchestra.

In 2010 Terrance Gray was awarded a Conductor of the Year award from the Illinois Council of Orchestras. We offer heartfelt condolences to Mr. Gray’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.
