Tamás Varga, principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, has commissioned pieces by composers Aaron Jay Kernis, Gregory Vajda, Akira Nishimura and Zdzislaw Wysocki to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata in B minor for solo cello, one of the most important works for solo cello in the repertoire. The commissioned pieces use the same non-standard tuning for the instrument as Kodály’s work. Tamás Varga has recently toured internationally to premiere these pieces in several major cities. On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, he will perform the Chicago premieres of those pieces in Guarneri Hall.
