In 1948, nearing the end of a remarkable career and life, Richard Strauss composed four songs for soprano and orchestra based on texts by Joseph von Eichendorff and Hermann Hesse. These were appropriately named Four Last Songs and published posthumously in 1950. Critics immediately lauded the these works as late romantic masterpieces and they became instant mainstays in the repertoire. The late composer, conductor and educator Cliff Colnot arranged this version of Four Last Songs for 12 players and soprano.
